This website is here for a reason. Actually
it's a bad reason.
My name is Ameen Kamadia. When my wife (she's
the nurse) first told me about travel nursing, I laughed at
her. There was no way I was going to believe that she could
work in a hospital for three months anywhere in the country,
and be given a free furnished apartment, free health insurance,
dental and life insurance, and be paid for traveling expenses.
I knew there was a nurse shortage but this
was just too good to be true. She insisted, so I told her to
look into it. And so did I. I started checking travel nursing
sites on the net. 99% of them were recruiters and that was
fine because I wanted to know if it was really possible to
get all these benefits.
We both discovered that it was true. So
excitedly we started talking about where we would like to
travel to: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Niagra Falls, Ney York
City, Hawaii, Alaska, etc.
I am my own boss, and have a few other companies
so I am able to travel with her. Now that we are traveling,
I work from home and it works well for me. But I am getting
ahead of myself.
Hina talked to a couple travel recruiters
but without any way to judge them, she just had to go with
the one that she felt best about.
For our first assignment we chose Los Angeles.
So the recruiter went to work. She found an assignment in
a place called Fountain Valley. For whatever reason we couldn't
find it on a map. We wanted to stay by the beach, the the
recruiter's housing department found us an apartment in Long
Beach.
Not knowing any better we set out. What
we discovered was that our apartment was miles from the beach.
And that the hospital was a good 35 minutes away. And that
was without traffic.
Our second assignment was for San Francisco.
But we didn't want to live in the city, so we found an assignment
at Stanford which is 35 minutes away from San Francsico.
The housing that was being offered to us
was less than desirable. But luckily Hina had a fried that
was also at Stanford and was living in an aprtment complex
right across the street from the hosiptal. We asked our receruiter
about it and she said the complex doesn't take travel nurses.
After forcing the issue, she got the housing dept to get us
an aprtment there. But if we had not had a friend there, we
would have gotten a lousy apartment.
Being the anal person that I am, I always
want several choices before I make up my mind. But when dealing
with the recruiters, for some reason they want to limit our
choices as much as possible. They give us the names of some
hospitals but know almost nothing about them. They arrange
housting for us, but have no idea how far anything is or if
the apartment complex is safe. Heck, the recruiter has probably
never been to any of the places she/he will send you to.
I am not saying that travel nursing is bad.
Or that recruiters are out to get you. Some are. But most
are just trying to do their jobs with very limited information.
And since the recruiters have limited information, travel
nurses are forced to make decision with limited or wrong information.
That's why this website is here. Hina and
I created it to help other travel nurses. To give and provide
all the information needed to help you make smart decisions.
We do not want you to go through the uncertainty
that we went through. And go through on every assignment.
Hopefully by gathering as much information on hospitals, apartment
complexes, recruiters, and companies, we will know which options
are best for us.
We do not want to charge nurses for this
information, nor do we want to recruit you for any specific
company. This website and its sister website, www.travel-nursing-reviews.com,
are here for your benefit: to make your life easier.
So read and study everything we have here.
And if you want to help us out, maybe you could click on some
of the ads on the different pages.
Thanks,
Ameen
