Things
to do in Texas
The Lonestar State
is a heavy favorite amongst travel nurses for work assignments
and for all the right reasons. Its outstanding blend of attractions,
historic cities, and cultural links are unparalleled. There
is a little bit of everything, from the mix of different landscapes
to ethnicities throughout. With this said, there are many
fun things to do in Texas.
Dallas, the second largest city in Texas,
is always a safe bet for fun. A mini New York, it is a very
cosmopolitan city packed with plenty of clubs, bars, restaurants,
and shopping malls, including the Galleria Mall - a recently
renovated shopping complex that also has a location in Florida,
and all of the major shopping brand names: Macy's, Saks Fifth
Avenue, Tiffany Jewelers, and a whole lot more. Sports teams
run amok here, from the Dallas Cowboys to the Texas Ranger
if you're a sports fanatic. For amusement park buffs, there
is a Six Flags Adventure Park perfect for the travel nurse
and his/her family on the weekends.
First in command with the largest population
in Texas, Houston is also a surefire entertainment provider.
More metropolitan than cosmopolitan, this city also has an
arsenal of amusement parks and educational venues like the
Space Center, packed with activities for adults and children.
Although the city is a big congested with traffic and heavy
crowds, it is very multi cultural - providing symphonies and
operas for the arts enthusiasts or plenty of cuisine for the
culinary fans.
Austin, Texas is another solid bet for fun.
The renowned 6th St area is like a mini Las Vegas, a strip
with night clubs and restaurants that are frequented by many
celebrities. Also popular here is the Annual Pecan Street
Spring Arts Festival, attended by more than 150,000 people
from across the country and plenty of live entertainment by
up-and-coming bands in all seasons.
A little less popular than Austin, Houston,
and Dallas is the Fort Worth area; known for its outstanding
zoo. Spend a day by yourself or with the children hanging
out with explosive chimps and orangutans and head over to
Asian Falls, a nature reserve right under a water fall with
tigers, lions, and bears. Much ado has been made over whether
or not the Fort Worth Zoo is superior to the nation's most
popular San Diego Zoo in landscapes and downright beauty.
See for yourself!
For a truly memorable getaway right in Texas,
go to Galveston Island. It's a weekend resort town right on
the Gulf of Mexico 40 miles away from Houston. The 32 miles
worth of beach strips might not be the most picturesque, but
the loads of activities like camping areas, bathhouses, and
gardens make up for it., but Galveston also prides itself
on its historic shopping district dubbed the Strand, a place
equipped with house cafes, gift shops, puppet show performances,
and folk music played by hearty musicians. In addition to
other family oriented areas like the Moody Gardens, Galveston
Island is sure to please.
Don't hesitate in checking out Texas as
a possible work assignment destination!
We call Houston home so you can be
sure of this advice: try to stay away in summer. It is just
too hot and humid. As a travel nurse you can go anywhere.
So during summer go a cooler spot, like somewhere in the mountains.
Come to Houston in the fall or winter when temperatures are
in the 80's during the day and in the 50's-60's at night.
